Default Re: Need parts rechromed

I restore British Leyland cars as a hobby. So most of the time I am dealing with stuff that was new in 1970's or earlier. Just thought I'd tell you my recent experience. I had two bumpers, two tail lights (Can't buy ones, even ONS), license plate holder (very unique, No ONS available), two door handles. The cost was $ 564. I had it done at Papago plating in Phoenix AZ. Quality was good to excellent. It was three layer plating. I think that was a great deal for what I got quality wise.

Besides what was mentioned (Hemmings -- superb source) may I suggest you research additional sources. Do a search on the Internet for plating in PA and the second contact a local car club and see who they use and third option is to go to a body shop that is going to do your paint work and see who they use. I deal with a body shop that does muscle car restorations and they are a good source of information. They laugh at me when I bring them these small British cars.

You can expect to pay from $1000 to 1500 for one bumper for concourse quality rechrome. In the size you are dealing with. That is without any repair work. Here is the real kick in the pants. Expect it to take about 12 weeks at a quality place. If you go out of your local area you will need to add shipping to that price.

The quality of my bright work was NOT Peeble Beach quality. But you need to be realistic when you ask for that level of quality. My car is a quality driver. If yours is going to be a real show queen -- trailered to all events then true concourse quality is what you want. I have had one car like that and it was a 1961 MGA with a frame off restoration. Every bolt and detail was refinished to OEM specs. By the way I spent four times what the car was worth. So becareful what you wish for and check your funds. Hope this helps.

I have a friend who started a TR6 when his daughter was 3 and she is going to be a freshmen in college this year and the car will drive out of the garage in 2012.
