Look at it this way if the molecules of oil were ball bearings and all your engine parts rode on them the synthetic would be all the same size and would therefore wear evenly (breakdown at the same rate) and conventional motor oil has all different size molecules (bearings) which the larger would break down faster because all the friction and wear would be on them before they broke down and the smaller size took over the load or wear.
