clicking means dead battery. When you hooked the cables up, you just didn't have a ground, so the clicking continued. Reversing the cables just heats things up, usually blowing a main fuse that protects the car from damage. Using good jumper cables and getting a good ground is essential for jump starting cars...patience in this case... check your main fuses...the big ones...
