I do not think IR is used at all; there is the LED for battery testing and the door unlocking mode selection and the transponder that reacts with the 'Halo' ring around the ignition switch. The transmitter in the fob unlocks the doors. All signals would be radio signals.

That's my understanding, but I have been wrong before.
