If it only happened once I would replace the bulb and keep an eye out on it. You can get a bad bulb sometimes.
I'm no electrician but I cannot see how you could wire up the bulbs to increase the voltage simply using just one battery.
If that was possible then you could bump it up very high and be a real danger.
