The 900 I was lucky to see 28 my fzr 400 got the best at 50 or 60mpg but it to was very bad on gas if you horsed on it. Your best bet on the street is a street bike those trail bikes are not built to maintain high speed for long distances and will destroy the valves over time. Not to mention braking and cornering. Another thought street and trail bikes are very light to compared a street bike you get blown all over the road weight is a good thing on a street bike along as you can hold it up and if you must pick it up.
A fast bike is not necassary because overall the main factor is mpg. I dont want the absolute most mpg possible though.....or I would just buy a ruckus 50 lol. I am narrowing searches down to mainly street bikes.. I just wont have time to trail ride like when I was 13. My dad just bought a DR650, so I ride his XT225 and its just not there on power. I still accelerate quicker than cars for the first 40-60ft. but to get to my parents house required a 5 mile drive on a highway at 65. If there is any headwind at all it struggles. Although tucked with me on it the I could get to 85 given conditions...... which still wouldnt be enough to pass anyone quickly.
