This fan action is typical of all cars with electric fans. What is abnormal with the XF is that the temp gauge is a apparently a real gauge.

Some cars with temp gauges are non-linear- displaying flat between normal and hot- in order to avoid customer complaints. Before all the on board computers this was accomplished with a circuit within the gauge. Now it is programmed into one of the engine management computers.
