I'm interested in what you do and how it comes out...both of mine look like yours!
I used a Dremel with the finest sanding disc that came with it. It took out all the pitting but left it dull so I used rubbing compound and a steelwool pad and polished the s%#t out of it. It came out better than I expected but it was really tedious...
