Default Diagnosing engine noise

I have a noise in my engine bay which sounds to me like bearings going bad, but I cannot tell which component it's actually coming from. Does anybody know how I could accurately determine which component is the source of the noise? I know of three possible offenders. 1. Idler pulley. 2. alternator. 3. water pump. I don't know if anything else could cause this noise. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated...
