All of that trouble to save a hundred bucks! I had a professional do all the work on mine 4 years ago and it cost me 120 (plus I gave him a 20 dollar tip). My headliner is still going strong. This is an easy and fast job for a professional and worth every penny.
The cheapest quote I found in Arkansas was $230 if I pulled and installed the headliner myself.
The fabric was pretty heavy but marked as "headliner fabric"..
You're right about the edges though. I do believe that I stretched the fabric in the corners facing the front of the car, and the tension slowly pulled the fabric away from the headliner board.
I guess I'll try it again, when I can. Or look for new quotes on getting it done now that I live in Washington.
On a side note, I broke two of the white clips that secure the rear plastics -- anyone know what I can do to replace them?
