I think the 'button' you are referring to is just a trim piece. I do not have to press or do anything special to my top release handle, just grab it, pull it down and twist. When twisting the header starts to push itself up slightly on its own. There is a spring inside the handle that is there to hold the handle in the stored position. Nothing else holds it up.
