Ok, in the last month I have met one Texas Highway Patrolman, and one County Deputy Sheriff. Both stops were right on...I was speeding. I was polite, and courteous to both officers. When the trooper stopped me, I drove a little further up the Interstate, and pulled as far off the shoulder as I could to give him room to walk up to the car. I received a written warning, which did not go on my record, and a verbal warning to slow down from the Deputy Sheriff.

These folks receive a lot of abuse from the public. Surprise them. Admit you were speeding, if you were, and be polite. I always address them as Officer. Don't raise your voice and don't become confrontational. You will be surprised how many of them appreciate a little courteous behavior. And, if he is off on the speed, simply tell him your speedometer was reading XX miles an hour when you saw his lights, and he may be right. Don't argue. My last ticket was in Nebraska, in 1986. It works, try it.
