The noise would be transmitted into the housing though. I would expect it is the pulley bearing, the bearing turns on the bearing until the SC kicks in as I said.
With the belt removed there are two things you can turn, the pulley and the SC by turning the black magnetic clutch.

The SC still spins at idle due to the engine pulling air through the screws. It takes a bit of force to stop the rotors, you can do it by stopping the black part of the clutch.
