Gentlemen, thanks for all the suggestions, virtually all of which I've now tried, even the PM that suggest a VooDoo witch doctor and sacrificing a chicken. Just to cover all the bases I've ordered a new fan and control module (as suggested by the witch doctor) and as soon as I can get up the courage to chop the head off a live chicken I'll install them and see if that makes any difference.
