Thanks for the early replies. Hardware should be manageable I thiink - I would use the engine and trans and perhaps the rear end, but keep the stock front suspension. This has already been done before by Mechatronic - see
Mechatronik W111 Coupe - European Car Magazine. Also google Car and Driver for a good video of the 3.5 versus a modern AMG. But theirs is a bit out of my price range!
My biggest worries are finding someone that can get the engine and trans and key talking. Would I also need to use the factory instruments? I have no idea.

I have already fitted an M116 450SE motor into my 1965 sedan, and could easily put a 500 or 560 M117 in the coupe but I was thinking of raising hte bar a bit!
