The effect is caused by tempered glass. What you are seeing is the internal stresses in the glass that partially polarize the light. Its these stresses that make the glass stronger and when it does break cause it to shatter into small pieces rather than large sharp shards. All side and rear auto glass is tempered and has this appearance with or without tinting.
