Of course, when prying, the paint needs to be protected, so a small flat piece of wood served that need. With the advice of Gary (Valk), I made sure they worked before pushing them into the holes. Now I can't wait till dark. Just sayin .....

Edit: After thinking about it, it might be possible to release the springy thing by using an old credit card, instead of the electricians screwdriver
Remove the lens covers and screws first - the screws expand the "little springey clips" to make a secure bond to the tailgate / trunk openings .....
