Popped the hood just now to check oil and water but when I went to close it again it did not click closed.
It is just half closed even though I have banged it a number of times.

Did you leave the water tank cap sitting on the fenderwell ?
Other than that, if the hood won't latch when dropped from 1 foot, then there is something amiss with the latch mechanism.
