One sweet Porsche 944
I frequently pass a rather nice looking Porsche 944 on my way to and from the office. Tuesday was a beautiful sunny day, so I stopped to take a better look at it. The guy came out to talk to me about it, and give me a closer look. It is gorgeous red, with a clean, tear and stain free interior. There are some minor rock chips on the nose, and a cracked dash. The nose is easily touched up by respraying one small panel, and covers are readily available for the dash. Other than that, the car looks showroom fresh, and has been garaged every winter from new (except for this one, when it was put outside with a "for sale" sign on it. And, it shows. Not a speck of rust, and as the owner claimed it has not been parked in many parking lots, not a door ding in sight. Features include: - 17" Borbet wheels & spacers, with nearly new Michelin Pilot MXX3 tires - Recently replaced transaxle, CV joints, and rear axles - Koni full adjustable shocks & alignment - New motor mounts, water pump, all belts, and radiator - New SACHS clutch - AC recharged - New 944 mats, Koss stereo and new speakers - Bought new in Germany and there are many more positive things I could say about it. The car has 124K on it, but considering that nearly all of the items that go bad on 944's have been addressed with top drawer replacements, I would not see that as an issue. Especially since these cars seem to be remarkably long-lived (the bottom ends on these engines last upwards of around 300K!). The guy originally wanted $7,900 for it, but would take $6,000 for it today. He also is getting rid of his other toys, motorcycles etc. It is SOOOOOO tempting, considering the gorgeous condition of the car, and how it is set up to really be a fine handling machine. Not too fast in a straight line (C&D estimated 7.5 seconds to 60 for an equivalent car), but probably a blast in the curves. How to convince my wife? Forget it. How to convince my buddies that one of them needs to buy this car, so I can live vicariously through him? It's one of those deals that makes you sick to your stomach, you want it so bad...
