The starter motor in all Crossfires is electronically controlled.
All you have to do is momentarily turn the key to start, then release it.
The starter will run for approx 4 seconds, or until the engine starts.

On auto transmission cars, there is a locking mechanism ( cable ) between the ignition key assembly and the transmission shift quadrant. You must be in position 2 to be able to move the lever out of Park.

The original symptoms you described sound like a CPS getting ready to retire.
( CPS = Crankshaft Position Sensor )

REPLACE ONLY WITH BOSCH - AVOID THE CHINESE AND MEXICAN ONES.
