HQ when developing the tuning methodology will get the real car in...ie at some point they had a crossfire come in, make some changes...test...make some changes...test...etc. until they are happy with the formula. Some cars cannot be improved upon.
MB historically leaves a good bit "on the table"...
The gtech data is interesting as this is real on-the road data ie proper airflow to the motor, temps, etc. The actual numbers can be skewed by altering the weight input of the car, road grade, etc. but of you use the same "setup" for a before and after mod test they are very accurate at noting changes.
