Yes, the alarm does have it's own battery, but most are toast by now.
As to battery drain, you can remove the neg (-) battery cable and connect a multimeter between it and the neg battery post. You should see around 35 ma normal drain.
If you see a heap more, start plucking fuses till you locate the source circuit.
