I followed the link below for removing console to get to cup holder.
Once I removed the cup holder, I held the lid down to the closed position
and drilled a hole through the side where you can see the gears, stuck a nail in the hole the same size and that held it from popping up. Re-installed the cup holder (that was useless anyway) now it looks normal.
