The purpose of those 2 holes is for pulling the complete motor out of the car with the 2 tabs on either side in back and the 2 bolts with cradle attached to the front on the s/c. I was happy to have them to use as MB designed this car/engine/platform with lots of serviceability in mind. I have a friend that worked at the MB dealership and asked him after the first time I pulled my engine and he told me about the cradle and bolts to use for the balance to pull with the complete motor out. Much easier and can pull engine and tranny still bolted together easy peasy with the adjustable engine positioning block.
