the set of conti sport contact 2 tires i just purchased from the tire rack had the same markings (but rears only)... i was baffled as well. i called the tire rack and spoke to a couple wholesale accounts reps, a customer service rep and finally... the shipping department manager had answers. he stated... the paint type markings on the bottom of the tread are the way continental takes inventory of their current stock prior to shipping to the tire rack or elsewhere. i was so concerned... i took a picture of the markings prior to my removal. the color was yellow with a small amount of blue in the tread area (4" x 3").
i have a lengthy relationship with the tire rack wholesale division from a past business... purchasing quite a few sets of tires... first i had seen of these markings. but i'm satisfied with their explanation. clearly new tires and the tire rack will
not sell blemish tires.
hope this helps...
