I should probably state more clearly my description of the pinging. I said it pinged like crazy...I would like to restate it to: It pinged to where I could clearly hear it in the 110 degree weather. I have been in cars (older 70's vehicles in high school) that pinged into detonation and were much worse than what I experienced in the chipped Crossfire.
That being said, it was a bit disturbing. What made it ok for me was that my mpg still was higher than w/o the chip, so it probably didn't matter too much. The increase surprised me, even to this day, because the knock sensor probably pulled back the timing as far as it could go and you would think at this point the engine would not return better mileage. I am going to conjecture that from what I have read, our Benz engine is a thin-wall cast block and transmits motor noise more than most, and therefore mild pinging that may not be heard in other engines is probably heard in ours.
