I had exactly the same before/after experience with my recently purchased SRT6. For $110 for the part, we have a beautiful Art Deco bat out of hades. I have the suspicion that the previous owner of my (and your) car got quoted similar prices ($2,200) to repair the problem and just decided to sell the car rather than face that cost on a 2005 model year car.
