Re: BEGi Turbo Kit information/discussion thread
Just a final thought. IMNSHO the place for boost is in a diesel. To "be all that it can be" taking a modern high compression gas engine and just adding a turbo is an exercise in futility.
Back in the 80s with the CR of a 455 in the 7's sure but to start at 10:1, sorry Charlie.
Lacking direct injection there is a limit to the compression pressure a gas engine can sustain before you get into massive detonation. That the E32 requires dual plugs (both in the wrong place) and premium gas to function normally is not a good sign.
One of the things AMG does in the SRT is to lower the compression ratio 10% to 9:1. This has two effects:
1) reduce the base chamber pressure
2) increase the combustion chamber volume
and it is the second that is most important because when you use boost to restore the max cylinder pressure it gets 10% more air/gas. You could really make more hp by dropping the CR to 8:1 and increasing the boost.
As it is, I suspect the stock supercharger is limited to about 5-7 psi max, is that correct ? In the great scheme of things 315 lb-ft of torque from a 3.2 is not that much. Jeep has a turbo 3.0 in the Grand Cherokee that makes 420 lb-ft but that takes direct injection.
Now obviously to put a 3,000 lb car in the 11's with a 3.2 is a remarkable achievement but I expect things to be a bit strained and detonation a real problem (av gas ?)
Know some do not like it but the E32/M112 and even the M272 (DOHC/4valve/plug in the right place) come off rather poorly against the later M276/Pentastar V-6s.
For about the same price as a turbo, you could install a later engine and am sure someone like Diablo could help. Parts from the Boyz with Vigor even.
