This is due to the suspension moving forward ever-so-slightly when there's no weight on it.
If he will squeeze it in there, it WILL fit. It's all about the angles

I've been following this too. My 275/30-20's do this exactly. The suspension swings forward when on a lift, then swings back when put back on the ground.
Your shop is correct, but worried for no reason.
