For mine, I'd have to drill the plate to get a larger screw in there. Plus it'd probably just crop up again later. This way I just replace the inserts if they strip out...
My rear bumper was drilled using a drill bit that was about 1/2 the size of the license plate holes. So when one of mine stripped out, a slightly larger screw worked for me. Every dealer must have drilled the bumpers to accept the plate during the cars dealer prep, thus there was no standard size for all the cars.
Fortunately they never drilled my front bumper for a plate, even though it's required here in Ohio. But then I did purchase my car new from a dealer in Kentucky. (I guess size doesn't matter there).
