After going through the issue myself and finding no less than 10 others who have as well, I would say you are incorrect in your statement about it not being common.

I used the old MAF, new O-ring and did everything according to plan, had issues for 2-3 weeks, then after about 10-15 hours of troubleshooting and going back to stock 2 seperate times, it finally just corrected itself, very strange, but these MB ECUs can be that way...
