Default Re: Mounting something above lower grill area

I found mounting DLRs to the lower grill area to be more challenging than I first thought. The problem I found mounting to the lower grill angles the lights outward. The farther outboard you mount the lights, the more they splay outward. It would work if you placed a spacer of some type behind the outboard side of the bracket to make the lights shine straight ahead. I tried that and didn't like it because the spacer was to obvious - to me anyway. I decided to mount the lights to the underside of the bumper in front of the lower grill instead of to the grill itself. This area isn't square either so I have to improvise some thin spacers so the lights didn't shine upward. As much as I hate to holes in my car I used small sheet metal screws. By mounting them this way I could square them up so they pointed straight ahead. Because of the bumper's curve I wasn't able to mount them as far outboard as I wanted but I'm still happy with how it worked out.

One potential problem with mounting them this way, is they must be removed to get the lower grills off. Mounting them to the grill means they come off with the grill. I chose form over function.

FYI Mine are Philips Daylight 8s which are bright and compact and come with a power sensing module which turns them on automatically when the car is running.
