Here is a hint: If the owner's manual says "see the dealer" you should read that as either:

"Take the car to an independent shop that works on MBs"
or
"Open the service manual and fix it yourself".

I just removed my dash to replace a burnt out blub, in fact two were bad. I didn't have to remove the steering wheel. I had the lower part of the dash down to the floor board due to fixing the key assembly, so while I was at it, I thought now would be a good time to replace those blubs. After removing the obvious trim, I just worked the speedometer assembly out, unplugging the left side until I finally got it out of it's home and parallel to the steering wheel and then just slid it out to the left. Nothing was broke, but it does take a little time to find the exact position to slide it out, but it will come out.
