If the cap isn't sealing right it can cause the EVAP system to throw codes till the system reaches the proper pressure. You can't tell by looking at the cap if it's bad you would probably have to pressure test it to tell. I'm not saying that's the problem I'm just saying it could be a possible cause of the CEL light with no codes.
