It does have a burnt smell.
Actually it might. If the clutch spring is weak, it could be slipping under the load. Although you would be more likely to notice it under hard acceleration in 1st or 2nd. It's also possible you may have something leaking onto the exhaust pipe or header. It's amazing how much bad smell a few drops of oil or grease can make.
