Scott, I installed bars 3 months ago but I didn't have the problem of "metal where the bars should go". Are you installing OE roadster bars or aftermarket? They should insert from the front (seat side) w/o any modification. The tricky part was inserting through the loose bulk head while guiding into the frame mount.

Nice job on your install! Your holes were so perfect that you didn't need trim escutcheons? And where did you get those AMG seatbelt pads? Very cool.
