With the issue about the rear pads falling out, you should have had front brakes to make the car stop. Yes, low pedal but the other half of the master cylinder should have been working. That is exact reason you have a double master cylinder verses the single from years ago.
Not sure what is going on here. Maybe the master cylinder went into bypass (defective).
