Question Exhaust Muffler size

For only the second time since I've owned my Crossfire, I met another Crossfire owner in a supermarket car park. Got talking and he told me he had a stainless steel performance exhaust fitted. Sounded real nice, just the sound I'm after, deep tone and not too loud. He says it is a free flow sports exhaust with the mid range sound (in between out and out straight through race and stock quiet). He was very pleased with it for sound and performance and admitted any gains in HP would only be seen on a dyno.
I took a peak under the back and noticed the muffler box was a round item about 12" x 6", single inlet from the stock Y piece and single outlet to a short Y and 2 tips. He also had the secondary cats removed.
I thought the muffler looked way too small and a little lost in the space ! But obviously works well.
I mentioned my thoughts on the muffler size and he said if he had opted for the quiet version, the muffler would have been twice the size (oval) and was happy the muffler man knew what he was doing.
Are there any guidelines/specs on optimum muffler size ?
It was a very good price and I'm sorely tempted.
