The manual says 0W-40 synthetic or approved for MB 229.3 or MB 229.5. I personally use 5W-40. If unapproved oil is used, engine damage and reduced engine life may result. I can't find where it is ok to use 5W-30. Overfilling or underfilling will cause oil aeration or loss of oil pressure which can damage the engine.
