I finally replaced the trunk lift supports, and they raise the hatch much more easily and it closes much more softly. The only problem is when opening, the force of the new supports causes the trunk to rattle and pop when it is fully extended. I replaced mine and the same thing happened. I tried two different brands. I think it has just been so long since I replaced them that I forgot it probably did that before. What brand did you use? The oem ones are terrible expensive.
