This solved the problem and the car started shifting again. Not long after the car had the same problem again, so we tried putting the old TCM back in to see what would happen, and it ended up working again! Now a little while later the problem is back. I read that it could be the connector plate instead, so we got that replaced, but it didn't fix the problem. Am I missing something? Do you think it was indeed the TCM, but just got another bad one and I should try again? Or does some code have to be cleared from the computer? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
The connector plate in the transmission is also called the electrical plate and it is assembled to the valve plate, either one can fail and cause problems. I think the limp mode uses second gear, I have had a solenoid go on a Chrysler 300 and it caused the same problem. If you have replaced the connector plate the possibly it I've solenoid plate. In either case a code should have been set and reading it should identify the problem. You do not have to clear codes to get the car working again, although they should be cleared.
