I discovered that when I took the cover off to listen to the noise, it went away. Looks like the hoses got kinked by the orientation of the pump and the filter. Twisting the pump and the filter to facilitate the path of least resistance, seems to have worked.

I put the cover back on now and all is well. Cheap pump, Cheap filter and all.
