I suspect the $8 soldering iron does not have enough wattage to heat those big pins. Here is a video showing how solder flows with the correct temperature (wattage) iron. In our case we need way more heat than the samples in this video.

Simular workflow except in our case the pins are bigger and there is already solder there, we just need to heat it till it flows back around the pin while adding a little more solder.
