You cannot noticeably stretch them, the hub threads would have been stripped if you did.
If they were clicking then they were too long for the job in hand.
Do not forget to use the proper shape of stud to match the seat on the rims, either ball or taper seat, use the wrong one and you will wreck the stud and/or rim and the wheel will come loose.
