Back in 1967 while I was at a high school dance (where they played those strange vinyl objects called records) One of Art Arfons (the land speed record holder) son's came in, (he didn't go to our school) and wanted to know who's red 64 Belvedere was parked outside. My buddy told him it was his, and asked why he wanted to know?
Arfons said he had heard that it was pretty fast, and asked him if he wanted to race. My friend said maybe, whacha got? Arfons said a Sunbeam Tiger.
My friend said, a Sunbeam, don't they make mixers? Everybody had a good laugh over his comment, then I leaned over and told him what it really was. Well my friends Plymouth had a 440 in it, relatively stock, shaved heads, aluminum intake, and a 4:10 gear. I think it ran 13.65 et's.
We all went outside to follow them to the usual place where most people raced. It was a mile long flat, straight stretch of road bordered by a lake on both sides, and visibility was excellent in both directions, known as Rt 43 about 6 miles south of Kent Ohio.
When Arfons asked where everybody was going, we told him to Rt 43, he said, no way, I didn't mean drag race, I want to road race ya through the valley.
Everybody started laughing, and shaking their heads at the ludicrous statement he just made. Needless to say, everybody turned and went back into the dance, and my friends reputation was safe. Because Arfons would have most assuredly handed him his "butt" on a platter after the first turn.

Sorry for the long "Back in my day" story, but that's what popped into my head as soon as I read jp2005s comment.
