Default Noisy spoiler operation

I've been meaning to ask this question since I bought my 2004 SSB Coupe back in May of last year. When the rear spoiler deploys or retracts I can hear the mechanism at work; it's not terribly loud, but it is noticeable. Having some music playing at moderate levels drowns it out completely. It doesn't sound like anything is straining, clicking, clunking, popping or anything else one would immediately associate with "bad", it just sounds like the mechanism at work.

Is this normal?

I ask because not once have I been able to hear the mechanism in my 2005 Roadster as the spoiler deploys and retracts, and I've owned that car since new. Radio off, top up or down, the spoiler action is just dead silent on that car.
