I thought of using the bolt extractor kit, but realized the "special" lug bolt has a ring that spins around it.
I have contemplated tacking a nut on the head of it. Any thoughts or suggestions to get it off?

Look at thread, Locking Wheel Nut Remover, the answer lies there.
The easiest way is to go to a tire store, as many carry the tools to unscrew the many busted studs.They also carry the coded sockets that take off the studs where the key does not exist.
