Usually they are added to help equalize the system and add hp, most systems have them for those reasons anyway.
Good question, I did a ton of research on this too and could not find a single example of hp increases on a 6 cyl engine from the addition of an H or X pipe. I think it's one of those hypothetical "sales" gimmicks.
If you can show me a dyno proving different, I will concede.
