It can be done without disconnecting the cable, but that switch has live contacts at the back of it and some accident could cause a serious problem. Dropping the lower dash exposes live wires, trouble comes from little slips and poof you see sparks.

It is always safer to disconnect the battery. Mind you the pollution sensors will need to be reset by driving the car as I sadly know too well.
