I have done it on my 6sp Crossfire, BUT it did have a fully charged battery. As for the OP's issue, might not have needed to buy a battery since the cause was a domelight on, not a charging issue.
Back in the 1980s I drove my Dodge van for months with an effectively dead battery, I could even park on the level and push it can catch it in 2nd. As long as it would power the alternator field coil, once everything spun over, it would fire.
